Four individuals have been apprehended after a police pursuit that began in Massachusetts and concluded with a vehicle crash in Rhode Island. The suspects, who were involved in the armed robbery of a FedEx driver in Harvard, Massachusetts, led authorities on a chase that crossed state lines. According to NBC Boston, the vehicle, a white Acura with Connecticut plates, came to a halt near the Providence/Cranston line after it crashed on Interstate 95.
Providence Police Chief Oscar Perez informed NBC that the chase began in Massachusetts, carried on into Rhode Island, and culminated when the suspects attempted to flee on foot following the crash. The four were wanted in connection to Thursday afternoon's robbery in which two men allegedly threatened a FedEx deliveryman with violence while he was delivering a package. All four individuals have been taken into custody, though their identities have not been disclosed.
The initial robbery took place on Thursday when a FedEx driver was ambushed during a delivery in the quaint town of Harvard. SkyEye captured video footage of the white Acura immediately following the crash, showing the vehicle's significant front-end damage and deployed airbags. Police had been searching for the car since it was identified in home surveillance footage of the robbery, as reported by CBS News Boston.
During the robbery, video shows how two men exited from the Acura and forcefully took a package from the FedEx driver's hands. The stolen item was reportedly a $1,900 Apple computer monitor. The homeowner, who had been expecting the delivery, noted she had seen the suspicious car near her driveway earlier that morning and that it lingered around noon. "The homeowner told WBZ she is not sure how the men knew it was being delivered and when," as stated by the CBS report. Authorities believe it may have been a targeted theft.
This incident comes as a stark reminder of the vulnerabilities present in the delivery process and raises questions about privacy and security in the age of online shopping.
