Residents of Grand Boulevard have been put on high alert following a string of burglaries reported by the Chicago Police Department. The CPD's community message warns of several incidents in the 2nd District's Wentworth area, where opportunistic thieves have targeted property within garages. According to the official alert, entrances were breached, and a variety of items were stolen.
The series of break-ins spanned a week, with locations including the 5000 block of South Michigan Ave, the 4200 block of South Wabash Ave., and the 4900 block of South Prairie Ave. Authorities have noted the burglaries took place between late December and early January under the cover of night or early morning hours. Specifically, the reported time frames were from December 29, 2024, to January 3, 2025, January 3 to 6, 2025, and January 7 to 8, 2025.
With these incidents raising concerns, the CPD is lending advice to homeowners on how to bolster their defenses against such property crimes. The department urges the public to maintain well-lit perimeters, ensure all doors and windows are secure, and promptly fix any structural vulnerabilities like broken locks or windows.
The police also stress the importance of preserving evidence in the event of a crime, advising against tampering with the scene and instead calling the police immediately. Those who may possess video surveillance of the area are encouraged, to save footage and provide copies to assist with ongoing investigations. Moreover, potential witnesses are to be engaged for their contact details, a potentially pivotal piece in solving these crimes.
