An incident on the southeast side of Indianapolis turned tragic yesterday night as a gun sale devolved into gunfire, leaving one man dead and two others critically injured. According to WTHR, Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department (IMPD) responded to reports of shots fired before 9 p.m. in the 3200 block of Capsella Lane. Upon their arrival, officers discovered three men with gunshot wounds.
The Marion County Coroner's Office identified the deceased as 29-year-old Sebastian Prayer Jones, a somber start to the new year and the city's first homicide of 2025. While one of the injured men has since been stabilized, the other remains in critical condition. Two additional males, believed to be present during the shooting, reportedly escaped the scene through a window and are said to be cooperating with law enforcement, as mentioned by WRTV.
The events preceding the shooting appear to have started as a transaction centered on the sale of a firearm. A witness relayed to police that what began as a business dealing quickly escalated into an argument and then a physical confrontation. According to a WISH-TV news release, gunfire broke out shortly after the altercation began, culminating in the wounding of three individuals and the confiscation of multiple firearms as evidence by authorities.
Investigators are currently piecing together the sequence of events and have yet to determine if the victims were also suspects in the incident. In the aftermath, "multiple individuals were interviewed and later released," as per the police statement obtained by WTHR. The IMPD continues to encourage anyone with information to contact Detective Anthony Johnson at their Homicide Office.
