The Humane Society for Hamilton County is urgently seeking emergency fosters after a critical heating system failure impacted two of its kennels, as reported by WRTV. Amid freezing temperatures, with digits plummeting into the negatives, the well-being of over 130 dogs is in jeopardy, making community support indispensable.
Addressing the crisis, Community Engagement Manager Lily Darling stated, "This is a dire situation. We have dogs in every cage, every kennel, every office." With even the office spaces strained to capacity, the shelter fears it may need to resort to setting up pop-up crates to house the dogs. Lily Darling's comments were obtained by WRTV in the context of showcasing the pervasive desperation for safe and warm spaces for these animals.
The humane society has made a clarion call for help through the official channels, urging locals to step forward. The WRTV report informs prospective fosters to arrive with a completed foster application, all household members, dogs included, for meet and greets, the landlord's pet policy if renting, and a government-issued ID. The gesture of fostering, even for a night or two, is framed as a life-saving act for the animals and for the shelter, which can thereby accommodate more pets in need.
Situating the urgency in the context of a biting cold that puts the dogs at risk of severe discomfort, the humane society promises the provision of all necessary supplies and support to foster volunteers. According to a statement obtained by WISH-TV, by welcoming a foster dog, "you’re not only helping that animal but also making room for us to move dogs into warm, safe spaces." Even as the heating units break down in two kennel areas, the community's spirit to foster dogs, which is necessitated now more than ever, hasn't broken.
The shelter, open from 9 a.m. today for those interested in fostering, has expedited the application process to quickly place dogs in secure environments. A follow-up on this initiative by FOX59 highlights the starkness of the problem: "The loss of heat in these 11 kennels has created an urgent situation." The immediate goal is to find fosters for the 11 dogs most at risk from the failed heating system while a longer-term solution is sought. Community members willing to help can complete a foster application online, as provided by the humane society's communications.
