In a recent move that has stirred controversy and debate, Indiana Governor Mike Braun replaced the state's Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) programs with an initiative focused on "Merit, Excellence, and Innovation" (MEI). Some critics argue that this move marks a step back from the state's long-standing commitment to fostering diverse workplaces and communities within the state government, as announced in his latest executive order, as per the Indiana House Democrats.
The governor's order not only eschews the previous DEI approach but also mandates a review of current policies to ensure they align with MEI objectives, at the same time, it effectively dismantles the Chief Equity, Inclusion and Opportunity Office established by former Gov. Eric Holcomb in 2020, as detailed in an announcement from the Indiana House Democrats. Amid these changes, Smith has voiced strong opposition, drawing attention to the implications for representation and equality in the state.
Condemning the governor's actions, Smith, a Democrat from Gary, didn't hold back in his critique, "In one executive order, Gov. Braun has turned back the clock on centuries of progress and equity," according to a statement obtained by the Indiana House Democrats. Citing civil rights figures such as Martin Luther King, Rosa Parks, and John Lewis, Smith underscored the historical importance of DEI efforts and their role in mirroring the diversity of Indiana's population in its government representation.
Furthering his criticism, Smith pointed to the stark numbers of minority representation in state legislature, noting, "You cannot tell me our government does not need DEI initiatives when only 16 of 150 elected representatives are Black," signaling a disparity that, in his view, challenges the rationale behind eliminating DEI practices, and further stressed that the mere 31 women serving in the state's legislative chambers, with none in Republican leadership positions, underscores a significant gender gap, "I can wholeheartedly say that my colleague's positions are not due to DEI, but because of their hard work and commitment to service," Smith told the Indiana House Democrats.
While recognizing the value in aspiring toward merit, excellence, and innovation, Smith maintains that these cannot be apart from opportunities DEI provides, as they enable individuals from diverse backgrounds to demonstrate their capabilities. His final call to action was a reminder to the governor, "The governor does not serve just a special few, but he is called by our constitution and a higher power to serve all people," as per the Indiana House Democrats.
