According to WTHR, 63 infants from the neonatal intensive care unit were among the 76 patients moved to the modern facility, attached to Peyton Manning Children's Hospital, as part of a $325 million campus expansion.
This carefully orchestrated relocation was designed to pioneer a higher grade of care by uniting mothers and their newborns under the same roof, facilitating what hospital officials regard as an essential continuity of care. "This is what needs to happen for the best continuity of care for our families," Julie Schnieders, VP of Women's and Pediatric Service Line, told WTHR. The new healthcare tower offers 109 private NICU rooms, injected with advanced technology, intended to elevate the standard of community care.
Records from IndyStar detail amenities such as an OB emergency department, lactation support, two laboring tubs, and private rooms that facilitate overnight stays for mothers and their babies. This marks a pronounced shift from prior arrangements where such accommodations and specialized facilities were distantly located, complicating postnatal care logistics.
Daniel Parod, President of Ascension St. Vincent Central Region, expressed pride in the operation's success. "Our project planners worked for more than a year to ensure a smooth transition to the new hospital," he said in a release obtained by FOX59. Notably, the new setting also creates a conducive environment for the healing and growth of babies like Hudson, whose early life tale underscored the urgency for accessible, comprehensive care.
Garnering support through philanthropy, the expansion received a chunk of its funding from the Ascension St. Vincent Foundation’s Care for Tomorrow campaign, chaired by former Indianapolis Colts quarterback Peyton Manning. "The result will be lives saved," stated Ascension St. Vincent CEO Kevin Speer in an enthusiasm-filled announcement, according to FOX59.
