An investigation is underway following the death of an inmate at the Multnomah County Detention Center, as confirmed by the Multnomah County Sheriff’s Office. An individual, whose age and identity remain undisclosed pending next of kin notification, was found unresponsive in their cell yesterday. Staff at the facility and paramedics performed emergency lifesaving measures but were unable to revive the person, who was subsequently pronounced dead by paramedics at the scene.
The investigation of the death is being conducted following the established policies for in-custody deaths. The East County Major Crimes Team, along with the Multnomah County Medical Examiner’s Office, has stepped in to ascertain the circumstances leading to the tragic event. According to the Multnomah County Sheriff’s Office, "Their investigations help answer questions as to why the death occurred and help us, and our partners, evaluate our response to the emergency."
The Multnomah County Sheriff’s Office has stated that further information will be held until the completion of a meticulous process. The community and the public at large are left awaiting results, on which the office commented, "No further information will be released at this time." Such instances of in-custody deaths raise deep concerns about the protocols and conditions within correctional facilities, yet also demand patience as the due investigative process unfolds.
