
Last night, a violent altercation at the Star Bar in San Diego's Central Division led to the in-custody death of an individual removed from the premises. According to a press release by the San Diego Police Department (SDPD), the incident occurred at approximately 8:15 p.m. when officers responded to reports of the male causing a disturbance and subsequently biting a security guard.
The first officer on the scene at 423 E Street managed to handcuff the unruly man, who continued to resist even after being restrained. The officer called for the San Diego Fire Department (SDFD) to secure medical evaluation quickly. Unfortunately, medics found the man unresponsive with no pulse shortly upon their arrival. After initiating life-saving measures, he was transported to a nearby hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.
SDPD officials report that the officers involved in the incident are veteran members of the Central Division's patrol team, each with over four and a half years of service. The press release specifies that no officers sustained any injuries during the confrontation. The San Diego County Sheriff's Office Homicide Unit has taken the lead on the investigation as per the Countywide Memorandum of Understanding, assuring a thorough inquiry into the events surrounding the man's death.
Investigators actively collect evidence and conduct interviews to understand the incident comprehensively. Once the Homicide Unit completes its investigation, the San Diego County District Attorney’s Office plans to meticulously review the case to determine any potential criminal liability on the officers' part. Concurrently, the San Diego Police Department is conducting an administrative review.
