According to a press release by the San Diego Police Department (SDPD), the incident occurred at approximately 8:15 p.m. when officers responded to reports of the male causing a disturbance and subsequently biting a security guard.
The first officer on the scene at 423 E Street managed to handcuff the unruly man, who continued to resist even after being restrained. The officer called for the San Diego Fire Department (SDFD) to secure medical evaluation quickly. Unfortunately, medics found the man unresponsive with no pulse shortly upon their arrival. After initiating life-saving measures, he was transported to a nearby hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.
SDPD officials report that the officers involved in the incident are veteran members of the Central Division's patrol team, each with over four and a half years of service. The press release specifies that no officers sustained any injuries during the confrontation.
