A Kentucky State Police trooper suffered non-life-threatening injuries in a crash during wintry weather conditions along Interstate 65 in Hart County, according to state authorities. The incident occurred yesterday as Trooper Landon Key had just finished responding to a previous accident near the northbound 57-mile marker. At that time, while his vehicle was still parked on the shoulder of the highway with emergency lights on, it was struck from behind by another driver.
As noted by WVLT, the trooper was transported to the hospital, where he was treated and released. The driver involved in the collision was cited with a failure to yield to an emergency vehicle. The conditions on the roads have prompted state authorities to discourage unnecessary travel, urging residents to stay indoors if possible.
Responding to the inclement weather that swept across Kentucky, Governor Andy Beshear declared a state of emergency the day before the crash, as reported by FOX 17. The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet had been actively working on snow and ice removal, treating roads in two-thirds of the state's counties to improve conditions for essential travel.
On the day of the accident, Kentucky State Police Post 3 responded to a total of nearly 55 crashes, according to The Edmonson Voice. In a statement obtained by the publication, KSP Post 3 highlighted the spike in adverse weather-related incidents. "Please try and stay in today, if you have to leave your residence, try and leave early, buckle up, and move over for vehicles on the side of the roadways," a spokesperson for the agency urged.
