Las Cruces Public Libraries is sparking conversations and creativity among the local community with their upcoming "Palabras y Artesanias" (Words and Crafts) session, centered around the poignant theme of Voice and Resistance. In an announcement made earlier, the event is slated for February 18 at 4 p.m. in the Boardroom of the Thomas Branigan Memorial Library, situated at 200 E. Picacho Avenue, offering a platform for participants to delve into the potent narratives that have emerged from the Latino poetry tradition, according to the City of Las Cruces.

Designed to probe the depths of political struggle as expressed in the verses of Latino poets, this session serves as an intersection of literature and tangible expression, where attendees will have the opportunity to craft pulseras, that is, knotted bracelets, that will serve as vibrant, personal emblems of their beliefs and messages a reflection of the enduring spirit encapsulated in the Latino tradition. The program forms a segment of a larger initiative, "Latino Poetry: Places We Call Home" which spans over the year, drawing on support from the National Endowment for the Humanities and Emerson Collective, and guided by the capable hands of the Library of America.

Las Cruces residents with an interest in further exploring the rich tableau of Latino heritage through poetry and crafts are encouraged to register for the additional sessions, all set to take place at 4 p.m. on select Tuesdays up until April. Mindy Del Campo, Librarian, stands ready to facilitate registrations, and answer queries, and can be reached at (575) 528-4024 or via email at [email protected].
