
A man faces serious charges after a woman was fatally shot inside an apartment in Chicago's West Loop area on New Year's Day. The victim, identified as 33-year-old Kristina Romandine, succumbed to a gunshot wound to the head. Following an investigation, 42-year-old Johnnie Matthews has been charged with first-degree murder and possession of a weapon by a felon, as reported by the Chicago Sun-Times.
The incident took place on the second floor of the Harvest Commons apartments at 1519 W. Warren Blvd. The address conflicts, however, with records that show Romandine resided in Alabama, court documents revealed her connection with the West Loop apartment, adding a layer of complexity to the tragedy while Matthews, who was seen discarding a black backpack believed to contain a loaded .380-caliber handgun, as detailed by the Chicago Sun-Times. This evidence, along with Matthews' alleged admission of involvement during an interview with Area 3 detectives, supported the charges against him.
As further specified by CBS News Chicago, after the shooting Matthews was apprehended in the 2400 block of West Belmont Avenue and placed into custody. The court has ordered that Matthews be detained pending trial. His next court appearance is set for Tuesday.
