A 50-year-old woman from McHenry was arrested in connection with a September pedestrian crash that resulted in a fatality. The McHenry County Sheriff’s Office has confirmed that Christine S. Eilers (Pine) faces charges related to the death of a 24-year-old man, Austin Stanek.
On the night of September 27, 2024, authorities responded to an incident on Roberts Road where Stanek was struck by a vehicle. The driver did not remain at the scene, prompting a thorough investigation, McHenry County Sheriff’s Office, along with the Island Lake Police Department and the Wauconda Fire District were involved in the initial emergency response. Stanek was transported to Advocate Good Shepherd Hospital but was later pronounced dead.
The subsequent investigation, spanning nearly four months and led by the Sheriff’s Major Crash Investigation Unit, gathered various forms of evidence. This evidence eventually pointed to Eilers, whose vehicle was located in a Lakemoor garage. In a press release shared by the McHenry County Sheriff's Office, the details were confirmed of Eilers' arrest on Monday.
Christine Eilers is currently being held in the McHenry County Jail. Her charges include a Class 4 felony for leaving the scene of a crash involving death, and a Class 1 felony for failure to comply/report a crash involving death.
