A recent incident in Miami Beach has led to the arrest of Karina Orozco Gomez who is accused of burglarizing the apartment of her deceased boyfriend, Emmanuel Londono. According to NBC Miami, authorities stated that Gomez stole jewelry and was responsible for damaging interior items including two vases, a bookshelf, and a picture frame.
Surveillance footage from the night of the crime in December reportedly captured Gomez entering the apartment with an unidentified man. Gema Londono, Emmanuel's grieving mother, remarked, "This woman decides to come with another man to my son's apartment that is already empty," as per her interview with NBC Miami. These events occurred while a new tenant was in the middle of moving into the unit,, throwning an added layer of turmoil into an already complex situation.
Emmanuel Londono had died of cardiac arrest just two months prior to the burglary. Gema Londono, in her pursuit of justice, helped the police identify Gomez as the suspect. She shared her incomprehension of the motive behind the act, telling Crime Watch Miami, "I don't know why she did that – maybe she wanted to go and steal my son's stuff. That's the only thing I can think of because none of my son's stuff belongs to her."
Empathy for the family's situation was highlighted by Miami Beach Police spokesperson Christopher Bess, who said, "So in a case like this, our detectives are very empathetic. We understand the witness had sentimental values tied to this unit. What the two defendants did in this case were extremely heinous and wrong." The bond for Orozco was set at $3,150 and, she was granted house arrest. Seeking closure, Emmanuel's mother believes that justice would be best served by deporting Gomez back to Guatemala, as per Crime Watch Miami.
