In an effort to alleviate the pressure on California shelters hit hard by the recent wildfires, the MSPCA-Angell is stepping up to provide refuge for nine dogs all the way from the Pasadena Humane Society, a journey coordinated by the Best Friends Animal Society, with the dogs expected to arrive in Massachusetts after a stopover in Delaware, as reported by NBC Boston. The Northeast Animal Shelter in Salem will be the temporary home for these canine evacuees, as they await adoption or fostering.
The relocation initiative comes as part of the broader MSPCA Disaster Relief Program aimed at providing support for animal victims of nationwide disasters; Josie Waldron, MSPCA-Angell relocation manager, spoke about the influx of adoptable pets, noting the high number of dogs already in their care and the ongoing search for both adoptive and foster families to help by offering these dogs a chance to decompress in a home environment, thereby freeing up much-needed space in the shelters, this statement was obtained by NBC Boston.
Meanwhile, on the West Coast, the Pasadena Humane Society has been working diligently to manage the crisis, succeeding in reuniting over 400 pets with their owners, while also continuing to care for nearly 200 found animals, as WCVB reports. In a move to further assist, the MSPCA has sent transport vans to Delaware to meet the incoming flight carrying these nine shelter dogs to the East Coast, emphasizing their commitment to making room for the Pasadena team to focus on local emergency animal care and reunification efforts with pet owners.
Before these hopeful hounds can start their new lives, they must first undergo a state-enforced 48-hour quarantine and receive any necessary medical care to ensure they're ready for adoption, the dogs include an array of breeds from hounds to German shepherds, pit bulls, and cattle dogs, aging from one to ten years old, the details provided by NBC Boston.
