A space heater is believed to have sparked a fire in a home in Murfreesboro, prompting an emergency response and a warning from local fire officials yesterday. According to WSMV, the Murfreesboro Fire Rescue Department responded to a call at a residence on Alexander Boulevard, where a fire in the master bedroom was quickly extinguished. The occupants, two individuals who were in the home at the time, were evacuated without injuries.
As per Rutherford Source, the fire department explained the preliminary investigation suggests the fire may have been caused by a space heater that was plugged into a surge protector and sparked, igniting nearby curtains. This incident underscores a peril during the colder months when the use of such heating devices is more prevalent.
The fire department has issued a public service announcement regarding the safe use of portable heaters. "Portable heaters can cause fires if placed too close to combustible materials, such as drapes, furniture, or bedding, so make sure to place them at least three feet away from these materials," advised the Murfreesboro Fire Rescue Department on its official social media platform. They also recommended that electric space heaters should be plugged directly into a wall outlet and never into an extension cord or power strip, to prevent overloading and a potential fire. The department's post also warned citizens against leaving heaters on while sleeping.
Responsiveness of the Murfreesboro Fire Rescue Department prevented what could have escalated into a more severe incident. Units on the scene included Ladder 4, Ladder 6, Ladder 8, Rescue 4, Engine 3, Engine 9, Safety Officers 1 and 2, and Battalion Chiefs 1 and 2. As winter weather continues to bring colder temperatures, the public is urged to heed safety warnings and exercise caution when heating their homes.
