Last year, Nashville saw a drop in the number of guns swiped from vehicles, hitting a five-year low. There were 928 firearms stolen from vehicles in 2024, a notable decrease from 1,209 in 2023. The decline represents a fall of 281 guns, according to a report by the Metropolitan Nashville Police Department (MNPD).

Despite the dip in numbers, guns stolen from vehicles still account for a staggering 70% of all firearms thefts annually. For context, 2023 had 1,566 total firearms stolen, while 2024 saw a total of 1,259 – both years emphasizing the ongoing trend where the majority of gun thefts are vehicle-related.

The Metropolitan Nashville Police Department has been proactive with their Park Smart campaign. This campaign pushes a three-pronged approach: locking car doors, removing valuables - particularly firearms - and ensuring no keys are left behind.

The Metropolitan Nashville Police Department made significant progress last year in addressing vehicle theft and related crimes. The initiative led to 1,036 arrests, with 560 stolen vehicles and 234 firearms recovered since its launch in February. Stolen vehicles and firearms are often linked to crimes such as carjackings and robberies.
