According to a CBS News Chicago report, the former Miami Heat star disclosed on his podcast that a seemingly unremarkable checkup led to the discovery and subsequent surgical removal of 40% of his right kidney, following a cancer diagnosis.
Wade, who retired from the NBA in 2019, admitted in a moment of candid vulnerability that he hadn't been diligent about post-career medical checkups. It was only when his father, who had previously battled prostate cancer, underwent surgery did the 43-year-old decided to take his health more seriously. "Why is my p--- coming out slow? Why is my stream ain’t powerful? Why is it a little weak?" Wade recounted on an episode of his podcast, "The Why With Dwyane Wade," referenced by Today. This spurred a full-body scan that brought the tumor to light, despite no initial signs pointing to kidney concerns.
Handling the diagnosis was a tall order for Wade, who expressed on the podcast, as Today picks up, "I think it was the first time my family, my dad, my kids, they saw me weak." Statistics from the Cleveland Clinic cited by Today underline the significant risk factors for kidney cancer, including aging, smoking, and obesity, along with a familial history of the disease.
