A tragic interaction in the western suburb of North Riverside has concluded with the fatal shooting of a 31-year-old man by police. The incident, which occurred on Sunday afternoon, escalated when officers from the North Riverside Police Department, responding to an emergency call at approximately 3:47 p.m. in the 8500 block of Cermak Road, came face to face with an individual reportedly armed with two knives.
An officer at the scene was compelled to discharge their weapon in defense of another person during the encounter. The deceased, a Crest Hill resident identified by relatives as Jose Evans, was subsequently pronounced dead from the injuries sustained. According to an NBC Chicago interview, Theresa Evans, the individual's sister, expressed her family's profound disappointment and a desire for greater support systems, saying, "I’m disappointed by the system. My brother will rest in peace, and we’ll get to the bottom of it.”
The officers involved were equipped with body cameras during the time of the shooting, and the Illinois State Police Public Integrity Taskforce has launched an investigation. This was confirmed by police officials and echoed across media reports. The North Riverside Police Department emphasized that the incident appeared to be an "isolated domestic incident," suggesting there was no immediate threat posed to the wider public.
Accounts of the man's prior struggles with mental health and substance abuse have been shared by relatives, according to a CBS News piece.
