A police-involved shooting at a popular Fort Lauderdale marina has left one man hospitalized and sparked an investigation into the officer's use of force. The incident, which unfolded at the Yacht House Park & Marina just before 6:30 p.m. yesterday, began when a property manager alerted the on-duty officer to a disturbance, Local 10 reported. After making contact with the suspect and calling for backup, an altercation ensued that resulted in the officer discharging their weapon and striking the suspect.
Witnesses at the scene have mentioned an argument taking place before the gunshot was heard, the specifics of which remain unclear, according to NBC Miami. In response to the disturbance at the Yacht Haven Park & Marina Resort, officials said that the responding officer encountered a man and shortly after the firing of the weapon occurred, striking the man.
The man injured in the shooting was transported to Broward Health Medical Center for treatment. Neither his identity nor his condition has been released to the public as of now. As per Major Patrick Hart of the Fort Lauderdale Police Department, the officer involved was not harmed during the incident. Investigations are proceeding with the Florida Department of Law Enforcement taking the lead, as is routine for incidents of this nature where an officer discharges their firearm.
Following department policy in the wake of a police shooting, the officer has been placed on paid administrative leave. While the details surrounding the altercation remain sparse, the ongoing investigation by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement is expected to shed light on the circumstances leading up to the shooting.
