To mitigate the risks of wildfires, the Moraga-Orinda Fire District (MOFD) announced they would be conducting a prescribed fire near Edgewood Drive in Orinda. Scheduled for today and tomorrow, the operation will start each morning at around 10:00 AM, conditions permitting. According to a social media post from the Moraga-Orinda Fire District, this proactive measure seeks to reduce fuel in the Tunnel-East Bay Hills Shaded Fuel Break, spanning Wilder to Lost Valley.
Prescribed fires like this one are essential in maintaining firebreaks and fostering better habitats for native flora and fauna. Collaborating with the Bay Area Air Quality Management District, the MOFD aims to conduct the burn with minimal community disturbance and under safe conditions. However, they caution that should the burning conditions turn unfavorable, the project might be pushed to a later date. MOFD has communicated that safety is their topmost priority.
Residents in the vicinity may expect to see or smell smoke and are advised to keep their windows and doors shut to avoid indoor smoke intrusion. Outdoor enthusiasts frequenting the local trails should also be aware of the possible smoke in the area.
