This morning, police detained over 40 Chinese migrants found in two vans at the intersection of Old Cutler Road and Kendall Drive, as reported by WSVN. The circumstances leading to the discovery have not been made clear, with officials yet to confirm whether the bust was the result of a routine traffic stop or predicated on prior knowledge.
Law enforcement's response was quickly organized, as seen in aerial footage obtained by 7Skyforce, showing occupants from the vans being seated along the roadside under the shade of obstructing trees. Those detained were subsequently loaded onto county trolleys for transport. Meanwhile, Coral Gables Police cordoned off areas near Old Cutler and Red Road, advising motorists to find alternate routes amid the unfolding scene.
This recent incident closely follows another detention event within the same locale. Two weeks prior, a security guard's tip led to the discovery of 31 Chinese nationals in a U-Haul van on LeJeune Road, close to Ridgewood Road. In that instance, as detailed by WSVN, the question of whether this was an act of smuggling or human trafficking remains unanswered. While the fate of the migrants is undisclosed, authorities took five people into custody related to the event.
Complementing these reports, Local 10 News disclosed an associated incident occurring on the same Tuesday morning. Law enforcement detained more than 20 migrants and two suspected smugglers after stopping a van on Kendall Drive and Oak Road. In their coverage, Sky 10 captured images of the suspected migrants being required to sit initially on the ground following the stop.
Looking back at a January 17 event, Coral Gables police disrupted what appeared to be a human smuggling operation after an alert security professional spotted what looked like a kidnapping by the Snapper Creek Canal, according to a statement Coral Gables Police Chief Edward Hudak gave to Local 10 News. That operation led to the detention of 21 migrants from various countries, discovered inside a U-Haul and another vehicle on LeJeune Road.
Authorities are continuing to investigate these incidents.
