The leap of UTEP Athletics into the Mountain West Conference horizon comes with significant financial backing, courtesy of the Paul L. Foster Family Foundation. An offer has been laid down to the tune of $2.5 million, as reported by UTEP. This charitable move arrives precisely when the institution is gearing up for its planned transition in July 2026.
Speaking on the contribution's impact, UTEP President Heather Wilson was quoted as recognizing the growing support for the conference shift. “I am grateful for the Paul L. Foster Family Foundation’s generous gift, which will help tremendously as we make this transition and bring back strong regional rivalries for El Paso fans,” Wilson stated, as per UTEP. Paul Foster, leading the foundation as President and Director, reflected on the past with an eye toward the future, remembrances of competitive clashes revived for the El Paso community, fostering, old rivalries.
The Foundation's commitment is not its first rendezvous with magnanimity in El Paso. Athletic ventures in the past, including construction and renovation exploits, have previously enjoyed the fruits of its open-handed spirit. UTEP Vice President and Director of Athletics Jim Senter recalled these acts, saying, “The Foster family has become synonymous with generosity in our community,” as obtained by UTEP, Senter continued to highlight the tangible results of the Foundation's prior investments, such as the construction of the basketball practice center and the renovation of the Sun Bowl Stadium club level.
With this financial infusion, UTEP is poised to renew feuds with the likes of Air Force, Hawai’i, and Nevada, among others, while also preparing to thwart new entries like Grand Canyon and UC Davis, all within the Mountain West Conference fold. This venture is also expected to catapult UTEP and El Paso onto a greater national stage, a move made feasible through the largesse of the Foster Family Foundation. December saw a similar pledge from the Woody and Gayle Hunt Family Foundation, propelling the transition budget up to $5 million as the Miners approach their new conference commencement.
