Rachel H. Mitchell, a long-standing figure in the Maricopa County Attorney's Office, took the oath of office yesterday to commence her first full term as County Attorney after a partial term that began with an election victory in 2022, fulfilling her predecessor's remaining tenure. Mitchell, whose career has been marked by a staunch adherence to the rule of law, has served the community for over three decades, as reported by the Maricopa County Attorney's Office.
Mitchell, who started with the MCAO back in 1992, has gained national recognition for her work in prosecuting sex crimes, focusing especially on the defense and protection of women and children who have been subjected to sexual abuse and assault throughout her service, for her efforts, she was honored by Governor Janet Napolitano in 2003 with the title of “Outstanding Arizona Sexual Assault Prosecutor of the Year.” Her legislative impact includes pivotal changes to Arizona's ‘mandatory reporting’ law alongside authoring the state’s sexual extortion and voyeurism statutes, not to mention legislation precluding defendants in sex crime cases from interrogating their own accusers when they choose self-representation.
The office under her command has taken serious strides towards executing justice, this includes setting adequate bail amounts for offenders to ensure the most dangerous remain behind bars; augmenting the Organized Retail Crime taskforce to tackle a widespread criminal trend; vigorously prosecuting dealers of the lethal drug fentanyl and educating the community concerning its toxic and fatal impact; and maintaining an active dialogue between the MCAO and the citizens it serves. As the next legislative session looms, Mitchell is at the vanguard, pushing for new laws to stem the tide of teen violence according to her office's statement.
“The real meaning of justice is far greater than revenge or punishment alone; it calls for mercy. It also asks us to remain humble throughout great wins and even failures, even when faced with horrific crimes,” Mitchell expressed her philosophy on the subject, as per the official announcement.
