Rep. Scott Fetgatter, R-Okmulgee, has expressed his thanks to the current administration for clarifying concerns about a federal funding freeze that had caused uncertainty for social service programs. The initial freeze raised worries among beneficiaries and public officials about potential impacts on services like Social Security and Medicare.
According to the Oklahoma House of Representatives release, the White House clarified that the freeze would not affect direct benefit programs such as Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, and SNAP. Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt explained that an Office of Management and Budget memo implementing the funding pause had been rescinded. "While I'm incredibly thankful for President Trump's diligence to scrutinize the spending of every penny of taxpayer dollars at the federal level," Fetgatter said, "I'm also relieved for the assurance that Oklahomans that rely on assistance dollars won't have any immediate impact on the benefits they currently receive."
Fetgatter confirmed that state agencies had indicated the funding pause would not affect the distribution of aid. Programs including funds for small businesses, farmers, Pell grants, Head Start, and rental assistance were not expected to be immediately impacted.
However, the executive orders related to the funding freeze have not been fully rescinded. The Trump Administration is still reviewing funding for other programs that may be affected. Fetgatter stated that he will keep monitoring the situation and be prepared to take action if new information arises.
