Following an extensive undercover operation, the Salt Lake City Police Department’s Special Investigations Unit and SWAT Team have reportedly disrupted what is described as an illegal gambling ring in the Ballpark Neighborhood. According to the Salt Lake City Police Department, more than $56,000 in cash, firearms, gambling machines, and narcotics were seized during the bust.
In a recent crackdown on suspected criminal activity, the SLCPD operated at the "My Podzzz" business at 1480 South State Street and a related business, “Urban Pawn.” The operations unfolded on the evening of January 21, resulting in the arrest of Ryan Delahuerta, the owner of both establishments. Alongside the cash and illegal contraband, officers detained a 38-year-old employee of My Podzzz for investigation, his name has not been released, meanwhile, 28 people found on-site during the search were detained and later released, one remained in custody. Salt Lake City Police Chief Mike Brown expressed his anticipation that the recent actions by law enforcement would contribute to the restoration of safety and community in the area.
The backstory to this intervention reveals a six-month-long saga of crime in the Ballpark Neighborhood, affecting both businesses and residents alike. With multiple aggravated assaults, robberies, burglaries, and an array of other incidents, police patrol efforts have been amplified, which ultimately led to this recent bust. In his statement, Chief Brown recognized the collective efforts of the Liberty Patrol Division and SLCPD Bike Squad in addressing the ongoing crime issues in the region.
Investigations into the relationship between My Podzzz and Urban Pawn suggest illegal gambling activities were carried out at My Podzzz, with proceeds purportedly making their way to Urban Pawn. Detectives are taking these newly acquired pieces of the puzzle into consideration as they continue to investigate. As the intrigue further unfolds additional charges against Delahuerta could be pending, he remains in custody at the Salt Lake County Metro Jail on charges related to illegal gambling.
