Salt Lake City is bolstering its commitment to affordable housing with the opening of the new 144 South apartment complex, according to an announcement on the City's official site. Nestled minutes from downtown and along major transit routes, the energy-efficient building brings 110 affordable studio and one-bedroom units to those earning at or below 60% of the area median income (AMI).
Mayor Erin Mendenhall, who doubles as the executive director of the Redevelopment Agency of Salt Lake City (RDA), celebrated the launch, emphasizing the critical role of affordable housing in a thriving community. "Affordable housing is a cornerstone of a thriving city, and projects like 144 South are one way we are actively addressing the housing challenges our residents face," Mendenhall said, as obtained by Salt Lake City. She added, "My administration is committed to creating a city where all Salt Lakers, regardless of income, have access to the resources they need to lead stable and fulfilling lives."
The complex doesn't just stop at housing; it provides a range of amenities, including a co-working business center, clubhouse, and an outdoor deck. Further reports show that the development meets Energy-Star requirements, hinting at the City's broader environmental objectives. RDA Board Chair Alejandro Puy spoke warmly of the development, "This development is a reminder that our cities, our communities, are only as strong as the opportunities we create for the people who call them home. Affordable housing like this is about dignity, hope, and the belief that everyone deserves the chance to build a life they’re proud of," according to Salt Lake City.
Financing the project, a $1.7 million loan from the RDA's Housing Development Loan Program (HDLP) was key, the City's site reported. Joined by an array of collaborators including the Utah Housing Corporation, Cedar Rapids Bank and Trust Company, and others, this collective effort underlines a shared commitment to expanding affordable living options in Salt Lake City. EMG Management is set to manage the 144 South property, bringing its expertise from managing thousands of affordable housing units across Utah to the table.
