A chaotic series of events unfolded in Springfield last Friday when 37-year-old Jennifer Poulin, driving under the influence of drugs, went on a vehicular rampage and managed to strike a police officer, multiple cruisers, several cars, and a building. According to a police report issued by the Springfield Police Department, the incident began on Belmont Avenue at around 11:50 a.m., culminating in Poulin's arrest.
The trouble began when Poulin, allegedly non-responsive to firefighters, accelerated her vehicle in reverse nearly hitting first responders and then proceeded to hit multiple cars including two occupied police cruisers, one officer was struck by the door of Poulin’s car, amidst her erratic attempts to escape; the events at the intersection of Belmont Avenue and Sumner Avenue saw Poulin crash into the Caring Health Center not once, but twice, sparking a tumultuous series of events leading to a damaged community facility and injured officers. Following the violence, first responders were able to gain control and apprehend Poulin on the 400 block of Belmont Avenue after her car ceased movement.
Investigators found that Poulin not only had a suspended license but also drove an uninsured and unregistered vehicle; inside the car, officers located crack-cocaine and methamphetamine was found on Poulin's person after her arrest. She was taken to Baystate for medical evaluation before being booked at Springfield Police Headquarters. The injured officers incurred during the mayhem received treatment at Mercy and were later released.
Poulin now faces a multitude of charges, amongst them are "Assault & Battery with a Dangerous Weapon," "Operating a Motor Vehicle with a Suspended License," and "OUI – Drugs," the aftermath of her actions not merely a tally of damaged property but a community, momentarily held at the mercy of one individual's recklessness, the charges laid out against her echoing the confused cacophony that had spilled out onto the streets as the day took a dive into disorder, as detailed by the Springfield Police Department. The two occasions where Poulin rammed into the Caring Health Center exemplify the physical toll wrought by the episode; additionally, the string of "Leaving the Scene" counts emphasize the hit-and-run nature of the infractions, a day marred by turmoil and lawlessness which, by good fortune, did not escalate into greater tragedy.
