A 17-year-old is in critical condition following a New Year's Day shooting in Raleigh, according to multiple reports. The incident occurred in the afternoon, near the Lux at Raleigh Apartments on Harriet Road. Memphis Police responded to the scene around 2 p.m., where they discovered the teen with serious gunshot injuries, as reported by WREG.
The young victim was promptly transported to Le Bonheur Children's Hospital, fighting for their life. In a tragic twist of circumstance, as the community was looking to celebrate a new beginning, violence has instead written a different story. No suspects have been identified at this time, and authorities are seeking anyone with information to come forward, Action News 5 reports.
A trail of blood led to an upstairs apartment, indicating the possible direction in which the teen had moved following the shooting, as observed by FOX13. A relative confirmed to the news outlet that the shooting took place outside before the victim ran inside.
Amid the chaos and concern, one mother, Tomiko Dickson, approached FOX13 reporters on the scene, mistaken that it might have been her own son who was shot. "They (son’s friends) came to me and called me and told me some 17-year-old had just gotten shot and I didn’t want to come down here because I didn’t know whether it was my son or not," Dickson told FOX13.
"People don’t care about people like they used to and that’s sad to say," Dickson reflected in her interview. Anyone with information is encouraged to urgently contact CrimeStoppers at 901-528-CASH, as the perpetrator remains large, as reported by FOX13.
