A tragic hit-and-run incident claimed the life of Eunikue Roberson, a 17-year-old girl from Gary, Ind., early Saturday morning. Authorities responded to the scene at the intersection of 5th Avenue and Madison Street at approximately 5:51 a.m., where they found the teenager unresponsive, as reported by FOX32 Chicago. The presence of an electric motorized scooter nearby suggests she may have been riding it at the time of the crash. Despite the efforts of emergency services, Roberson was pronounced dead at the scene.
The Gary Police Department confirmed that the vehicle involved had fled after striking Roberson and that a large amount of debris was scattered across the roadway when officers arrived. According to a statement obtained by FOX32 Chicago, investigators executed a search warrant and seized the suspect's vehicle at a residence, where they also took a person of interest into custody. The identification of Roberson was later verified by the Lake County Coroner, who will be conducting a forensic autopsy come Monday morning.
