Gresham police have identified the victim as 17-year-old Jorge Ovidio Mateo Vasquez. According to KOIN, the fatal incident occurred at the Southeast Portland park last Thursday.
Police arrived at the scene in the 1400 block of Southeast 182nd Avenue shortly after 4 p.m. to discover Vasquez with fatal gunshot wounds. As per KATU, a public official expressed deep concern about the prevalence of gun violence, especially in East County. "I'm obviously very concerned about gun violence in our community. Particularly in East County, but really throughout our county," he said. Emphasizing support for law enforcement and district attorneys, he ascertained a commitment to seeking justice for Vasquez's family.
The East County Major Crimes Team is conducting the investigation. As the community reels from this tragedy, the urgency for answers and a call to action against the tide of gun-related incidents is palpable. The quest for resolution continues as the authorities appeal to the public for any information that might lead to an understanding of this unfortunate event and the apprehension of those responsible.
