With movements indicative of a broader national trend, Tennessee has been highlighted as the No. 5 growth state in 2024 by U-Haul's Growth Index, a fixture in its fifth consecutive year in the top 10. As discussed by U-Haul International’s president, John Taylor, this movement is largely due to the state's southern charm and pro-business environment. This data was compiled from the analysis of one-way customer transactions using the company’s trucks, trailers, and portable moving containers.
According to WSMV, Tennessee ranked behind South Carolina, Texas, North Carolina, and Florida in the index, which indicates a continued preference for southern destinations over northeast, midwest, and west coast states. Reporting an insight from U-Haul, areas within Tennessee, such as Metro Nashville, gained considerable traction, ranking No. 6 among the nation's metros for growth. As U-Haul's area district vice president Jeff Porter expressed, the friendliness and welcoming attitude of the state's residents contribute significantly to its appeal.
Cities like Nashville, along with Brentwood, Clarksville, Cookeville, and many others, have been significant contributors to the state's growth spurt, as per WKRN. People moving to Tennessee have been motivated by a variety of factors including job opportunities, cost of living, and the state's tendency to say "hello to someone when they pass you on the street," said Porter.
Porter told Williamson Source that, "A lot of people are moving here because of how pro-business our government is." Tennessee continues to experience an inflow of new residents and businesses due to its low tax burden. Meanwhile, states like California lag at the bottom of U-Haul's rankings, experiencing the largest loss of one-way traffic for the fifth year in a row, highlighting a tendency for people to leave higher cost-of-living areas.
