A tragic start to the new year unfolded in Lemon Grove on Wednesday morning when a traffic collision claimed the lives of two pedestrians. The incident occurred just after 11:00 a.m. at the intersection of Buena Vista Avenue and Broadway. According to the San Diego County Sheriff's Department, deputies arrived at the scene to discover two vehicles had collided, sending one car careening into the unfortunate pair.
First responders, including paramedics and deputies, attempted life-saving measures, but both pedestrians were sadly pronounced dead at the scene. The drivers of the vehicles were transported to the hospital with injuries that were deemed non-life threatening. The names of the pedestrians have not been released, pending notification of their families.
The investigation into the cause of the collision by the Sheriff's Traffic Accident Reconstruction (STAR) Team resulted in the closure of the intersection for several hours, with roads reopening around 8:00 p.m. Surveillance footage from nearby the crash site has been collected to aid in the investigation.
In light of the situation, which precluded immediate DUI evaluations at the scene, both drivers provided blood samples at the hospital, done voluntarily to test for alcohol and drugs. The results will offer critical insight into the circumstances of this fatal encounter.
