Westfield made headlines again for David Fisher and his son, Felix, who received the Lifesaving Citizen Award. They were honored for saving a young man and his dog from icy waters. The award ceremony was held at the City Council meeting last Monday.
The incident occurred on December 14, 2024, when Felix Fisher heard calls for help and immediately notified his father. Without hesitation, the duo used ropes to pull both the 19-year-old man and his canine companion to safety. After, the rescue David and Felix Fisher welcomed the pair into their home, providing warmth and shelter until emergency services arrived. The City of Westfield's official statement heralded their bravery and compassionate response.
At the event, Mayor Scott Willis lauded the Fishers, "I’ve always known that Westfield is filled with brave, kind-hearted people, but what David and Felix did is absolutely remarkable," according to Westfield's civic alerts. "Their courageous actions are the definition of what it looks like to care for your neighbor. We are proud to honor them with this well-deserved award."
Recognizing the impact of the Fishers' deeds, Westfield Fire Chief Rob Gaylor emphasized the rarity of such positive outcomes. "Stories like these don’t always have a positive outcome," Gaylor expressed his department's gratitude, "MMy department and I are extremely grateful to David and Felix for their quick-thinking and selfless actions that day," a statement obtained by the City of Westfield.
