Early Thursday morning, tragedy struck in Chicago's Portage Park neighborhood when a 35-year-old woman was shot in the chest. The incident, reported by both Chicago Sun-Times and CBS News Chicago, occurred in the 5800 block of West Newport Avenue around 4:50 a.m.
After being shot, the woman was taken to Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center. Despite the doctors' efforts, clinging to the slimmest margins of life, she succumbed to her injuries and died. The CBS News Chicago report stated that no other injuries were reported in the incident.
Identified as a person of interest, Chicago police are speaking to an individual in connection with the shooting. However, as of the last update, no charges have been formally announced. The ongoing investigation by Area 5 detectives attempts to piece together the circumstances of the early morning violence.
The identity of the woman has not been released pending notification of next of kin. The neighborhoods, often cradled in the perceived safety of their own homes, now must confront the reality of gun violence that has claimed one of their own. As per the statement given by law enforcement, the investigation remains active and ongoing, with any potential developments to be disclosed in due time.
