A 15-year-old boy is in serious condition following a shooting in West Jordan late Wednesday night, as confirmed by local authorities. West Jordan Police Department (WJPD) responded to a 911 call at approximately 11:20 p.m. about gunshots in a neighborhood near 3400 West and 6600 South. Upon their arrival, officers found the teenage victim with a gunshot wound, KUTV reports.
Initially characterized as an apparent drive-by incident by other outlets, police later clarified that the shooting was not a drive-by, though it may still to have involved a vehicle. The teen, whose name has not been released, was transported to the hospital, and his condition is reportedly serious, although specific details about his condition have yet to be disclosed. As per ABC4, the suspects remain at large, and the WJPD is following up on leads to identify those responsible.
Despite the seriousness of the event, WJPD Officer Aleya Mason has indicated that the public is not believed to be in any danger, with the incident being treated as isolated. An investigation is ongoing, and officers were seen searching the yard of a home and towing a passenger car from the property early Thursday, though it is unclear if the vehicle is directly linked to the investigation, according to KUTV.
There have been no descriptions of the shooter provided by the police, and it remains unclear whether the victim was specifically targeted. Following the shooting, some road closures were put in place but were reopened by 5:30 a.m. West Jordan Police urge anyone with information about the shooting to quickly contact dispatch at 801-840-4000, as noted by both ABC4 and KUTV. In addition, FOX 13 News stated that they are in contact with officials and will provide updates as more information becomes available.
The police department has scheduled a press conference for 10 a.m. Thursday to address the media concerning the shooting, and local outlets such as KUTV have planned to stream the event live on various platforms.
