In the aftermath of a tragic collision between an SUV and a Metra Electric Line train in South Chicago, 19-year-old Moises Perez faces serious charges. Perez has been charged with reckless homicide, among other offenses, after the crash that resulted in the death of a passenger and critical injuries to two others, reported the Chicago Sun-Times.
The incident unfolded around 12:30 a.m. last Wednesday at the 87th Street crossing. An investigation confirmed that the crossing gates were operational at the time, yet Perez allegedly ignored these safety measures and proceeded through the crossing. His vehicle was then struck by a northbound train, leading to the critical events currently under judicial scrutiny. Perez, charged with driving without a license and disobeying a railroad crossing, was arraigned in Cook County Circuit Court with a follow-up court date set for March 5, according to details shared by Metra officials.
One of the deceased victims was identified as 19-year-old Elissa J. Hernandez, who was pronounced dead at the scene. The two other passengers, whose critical conditions have kept them hospital-bound, have yet to be identified publicly. As for Perez, following his hospitalization after the event, has been released but remains detained without bond as the court proceedings continue.
Further information released by Metra Newsroom emphasizes the charges Perez confronts, including one count of reckless homicide, two counts of aggravated DUI causing death, four counts of aggravated DUI causing great bodily harm, and two counts of aggravated for driving without a license and disobeying a railroad crossing.
