A 31-year-old man was shot to death late Tuesday night at a gas station along McCormick Boulevard in Skokie, in what police say marks the suburb's second homicide of the year. Officers responding to the 7400 block of McCormick Boulevard found the man suffering from multiple gunshot wounds shortly before 11:07 p.m. He was rushed to an area hospital, where he later died.
According to ABC7 Chicago, Skokie police said the shooting was not a random attack, though additional information about the victim was not available. Scene video reviewed by CBS Chicago showed officers investigating a vehicle at the Shell gas station on the southwest corner of Howard Street and McCormick Boulevard, directly across from the Terence J. O'Brien Water Reclamation Plant along the North Shore Channel. That intersection sits near Skokie's eastern border with Evanston, along a stretch of Howard Street that has seen its own share of gun violence investigations in recent months.
Regional Task Force Joins the Investigation
The North Regional Violent Crimes Task Force, known as NORTAF, has been activated to assist Skokie police with the investigation, Patch reported. NORTAF was established in 1997 as a cooperative agreement among Skokie and 11 neighboring northern Cook County municipalities, pooling police personnel and specialized resources for major crimes, according to the Village of Skokie. Member departments share homicide investigators, forensic experts, and units dedicated to processing evidence from serious crashes and shootings.
The killing marks Skokie's second homicide of 2026, following a fatal shooting three months earlier, per the Record North Shore. That earlier case involved 21-year-old Jordan M. Buelvas, who was shot and killed outside his home near LaCrosse Avenue and Grove Street, a story Hoodline covered in a pre-dawn Skokie shooting. Police recovered a vehicle connected to that May incident but had not announced any arrests as of Tuesday's shooting.
A Rare Spike for a Historically Quiet Suburb
Two homicides in eight months represent a notable shift for Skokie, a village of roughly 67,000 residents that recorded zero homicides in both 2023 and 2024, one in 2022, and two in 2021, according to the Record North Shore. Police have stressed in both 2026 cases that preliminary evidence points to targeted attacks rather than random violence, though no arrests have been announced in either killing.
The Howard Street corridor connecting Skokie and Evanston has drawn police attention before. Hoodline reported in May that an 18-year-old was arrested following an April shooting in the 700 block of Howard Street in Evanston gunfire on Howard Street, just blocks from the site of Tuesday's shooting.
What Comes Next Legally
If a suspect is eventually charged, any felony case would move through the Circuit Court of Cook County's Second Municipal District at the Skokie Courthouse on Old Orchard Road, which handles felony matters originating in the village separately from Chicago's court system. Under Illinois law, a first-degree murder conviction carries a mandatory prison term of 20 to 60 years served in full, with firearm enhancements that can add 15 to 25 years or result in a life sentence if a gun was discharged during the crime. Illinois law bars probation for first-degree murder convictions.
