
A 7-year-old boy in northwest Atlanta is now in the process of recovery after a distressing incident yesterday afternoon where he accidentally shot himself in the leg. The shooting occurred in the 1900 block of Martin Luther King Jr. Drive NW, details provided by the FOX 5 Atlanta report. Police say, the boy found an unsecured firearm in the home, leading to his self-inflicted injury.
When first responders arrived, they found the child "alert, conscious and breathing," according to a statement obtained by WSBTV. He was promptly taken to a local hospital for immediate care. The specifics on the boy's current health status remain undisclosed, but authorities project a full recovery.
As the investigation progresses, the Atlanta Police Department is examining how the child was able to access the weapon which was not properly secured within the residence. There has been no information released concerning the ownership of the firearm, or the details surrounding the child's interaction with it prior to the incident. Police have neither announced any arrests nor indicated if there will be charges filed in relation to the shooting.
