Commuters in Belle Chasse should brace themselves for traffic shifts and lane closures as the Belle Chasse Bridge and Tunnel Replacement Project enters a critical phase of construction.The Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development Officials announced scheduled works that will affect traffic patterns starting Tuesday, February 11, from 8:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Northbound travelers will find the left lane shut from Burmaster Rd. to RaceTrac, while those headed southbound will face a right lane closure stretching from Engineers Rd. to Barriere Rd, as reported by the Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development.
According to the Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development same announcement, the old Belle Chasse Bridge will also see a northbound right lane closure. These traffic disruptions, dependent on the weather and subject to change, are meant to pave the way for smoother rides in the future, even if they currently represent an inconvenience for those seeking passage through LA 23.
Following Tuesday's activities, a similar southbound right lane closure will be in place from RaceTrac to Engineers Rd. on Wednesday, February 12, ensuring that the relentless push forward in infrastructure development is equally felt in both directions of travel.
However, the most significant impact looms over the Valentine's Day weekend with a full temporary bridge closure. From Friday, February 14, at 7:30 p.m. until Monday, February 17, at 5:00 a.m., a double lane closure will strangle the usual flow of LA 23 northbound and southbound traffic from Engineers Rd. to Barriere Rd. During this period, all traveling cars will be temporarily shifted onto the old Belle Chasse lift bridge—a move deemed necessary for the completion of asphalt work on approach ramps, as per the Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development.
In a crucial stage, once the dust settles following the weekend's intensive works, southbound traffic will find itself sailing smoothly on a newly minted Belle Chasse Bridge in its final configuration, officials promise. In contrast, drivers bound north will return to the familiarity of the old bridge until further notice. All drivers are advised to prepare for altered travel times and exercise patience as the project heads toward completion.
