Commuters in Collierville experienced delays early this morning after a mishap on Byhalia Road just north of Winchester Road led to an unexpected road closure. According to a social media post by the Collierville Police Department, a pole was struck, causing power lines to sag dangerously across the roadway. MLGW was reported to be on the scene assessing and addressing the damage incurred, leading to the temporary closure as they worked to replace the damaged pole.
During the traffic disruption caused by the initial incident, another vehicle compounded the area's troubles by hitting the southbound railroad crossing arm on Byhalia at South Rowlett. The damaged railway arm necessitated that the southbound lanes of Byhalia remain shut for an extended period, as repairs had to be carried out before normal traffic flow could resume. "Roadway is open from the traffic crash but during the traffic issue, someone struck the southbound railroad crossing arm on Byhalia at South Rowlett which will require the southbound lanes of Byhaila to stay closed a little longer as the railroad repairs the broke arm," the Collierville Police Department conveyed through their updates.
In the latest update, shared at 8:00 am, the Police Department informed the public that the roadway had been reopened. Those earlier planning alternative routes could once more traverse the Byhalia Road, although they might have faced residual congestion as the flow of traffic normalized after the morning's disruptions. Local authorities have not yet released information about any potential injuries resulting from either the initial pole incident or the subsequent damage to the railroad crossing arm.
