Republican U.S. Rep. Byron Donalds has entered the 2026 Florida gubernatorial race, aiming to succeed Gov. Ron DeSantis, who is limited to two terms. FOX 28 reports that Donalds, from Naples in southwest Florida, is seeking the position after DeSantis' term ends.
Donalds has gained significant support with President Donald Trump's endorsement, which could help him in the primaries. Trump stated on his social media site, "Byron Donalds would be a truly Great and Powerful Governor for Florida and, should he decide to run, will have my Complete and Total Endorsement," as quoted in the NBC Miami report.
Despite DeSantis suggesting his wife, Casey DeSantis, could be a potential gubernatorial candidate, Donalds remains focused on his own campaign. Speaking on the NBC Miami report, he praised DeSantis' work as governor, stating he had done a “tremendous job for our state.” However, Trump’s backing seems to be a more significant factor in the race. Donalds has outlined his goals of lowering insurance costs, promoting the cryptocurrency sector, and protecting Florida’s Everglades.
Donald's candidacy holds historical significance. He told NBC Miami, "Florida is not going to stop leading," and if he wins, he would become the first African American governor of Florida. However, his path to victory is not certain, as other GOP figures, including former U.S. Rep. Matt Gaetz and Florida Agriculture Commissioner Wilton Simpson are also rumored to be considering a run.
