Yesterday, Campbell Police Department officers were dispatched to the scene of a reported disturbance on Union Avenue, where a gunshot had pierced the silence of the early morning. Officers arrived around 4:53 AM to find that a shot had been fired into an occupied residence, but no one was injured, as per the Campbell Police Department.
The suspect, identified as 33-year-old Jose Hurtado of Campbell, had barricaded himself inside his home, prompting a standoff. As the tension escalated, the police evacuated nearby homes, indicating how volatile the situation could have been. With a potentially armed individual and memories of previous violent encounters, the SWAT Team and Crisis Negotiation Team (CNT) were called to the scene. At the same time, the Santa Clara County Sheriff’s Office managed local traffic.
After hours of silence, Hurtado emerged from his residence at about 10:15 AM, ending the standoff. The police took him into custody without any further trouble, recovering an unregistered semi-automatic handgun in the process. Hurtado's criminal record, equipped with multiple offenses, added weight to the charges he now faces, including felon in possession of a firearm and shooting into an occupied dwelling.
