Central Indiana residents are facing a slate of weather-related concerns this weekend, with the National Weather Service in Indianapolis forecasting conditions ranging from drizzle and freezing rain to potential snow accumulation in the coming days. A Special Weather Statement issued by the National Weather Service early this morning highlighted "light rain and drizzle will expand north into central Indiana" with the possibility of freezing rain creating slick spots on untreated roadways, especially across the northern half of the region.
The forecast suggests light freezing rain could affect areas near and around I-70 for a few hours before giving away to rain, according to the National Weather Service Indianapolis, though any ice should be minimal and due to changing conditions, that leaves a good number of commuters potentially facing a slippery drive into work. Today's high is expected near 41 degrees with an east wind shifting westerly in the afternoon and gusts that could reach 18 mph, while tonight's low is predicted to drop to around 28 degrees under cloudy skies.
Looking forward to the weekend and into next week, the NWS outlook is not too bright: snow could be on the table starting Monday night through Tuesday night, and again Wednesday afternoon through Thursday. Accumulations have yet to be pegged with certainty at this stage but that the chance of precipitation by midweek hovers around 70 percent it's an affair not to be dismissed. Moreover, the snow might be met with rain, turning purely to snow after 1 a.m. on Wednesday night.
Regarding the rest of the week, daytime highs will fluctuate between the mid-30s and high 30s with lows potentially dropping to the 16-degree mark by Thursday night. Those commuting or traveling in central Indiana are advised to stay informed via the NWS site or local news sources and plan accordingly for winter weather conditions as they develop, it's a sound strategy to avoid unnecessary risks on the road. Periodic updates will provide clearer information on the extent of possible snowfall and any further weather advisories.
