
Residents of River North and patrons of its nightlife should be on alert after an attempted criminal sexual assault was reported in the area. The Chicago Police Department has issued a community alert detailing the incident, which took place in the early morning hours of October 12, 2024. According to the police report, a 31-year-old woman encountered the male suspect at a downtown bar before he offered her a ride home and subsequently attempted to sexually assault her.
The incident occurred on the 300 block of W. Erie Ave. around 2:40 a.m., a place usually bustling with late-night activity, when the suspect attempted the assault. Described as a white male, approximately 6'0" tall, with brown hair, and dressed in jeans and a white shirt, the offender's identity remains unknown as the authorities continue their investigation.
In response to the attack, the police are urging anyone who might have been approached by the witness to provide contact information. Calling 9-1-1 immediately is advised, in addition to staying on the scene if possible. The handling of any potential evidence is discouraged until law enforcement arrives. Vigilance and timely reporting of suspicious activity are also emphasized as crucial.
The CPD has also reminded local businesses to be aware of this crime and to check that their surveillance systems are operational. The police request that "If video surveillance is available, save a copy of the incident for detectives." The security footage could play a pivotal role in identifying the assailant and preventing future incidents.
