The Chicago Police Department has issued a community alert for the residents of the Garfield Park and North Lawndale neighborhoods in the city's 11th District, warning of a spike in armed robberies and aggravated vehicular hijackings. According to CPD's alert, a series of recent criminal incidents have alarmed local citizens and put rideshare drivers at particular risk.
In these distressing encounters, rideshare apps are being manipulated by unknown individuals to trap their victims. The drivers, upon arriving at the predetermined pick-up locations, are met by imposters pretending to be passengers. At their final destination, the drivers confront weapons or physical force, as assailants demand personal belongings and take control of their vehicles. Specific incidents were reported on blocks throughout Garfield Park and one location in North Lawndale, with the crimes occurring from January 5th through February 2nd of this year.
The offenders have been described as a group of up to six Black male teenagers with thin builds, all attired in dark clothing and ski masks. The police are seeking assistance from the community with the hopes that someone may remember any distinguishing features of these young men, which could help lead to their apprehension. During a robbery, the CPD advises against any resistance and urges not to engage in pursuit if the assailant flees. Instead, any witnesses to the crime should dial 9-1-1 immediately, attempt to recall any unique details of the suspects and stay on the scene when possible.
The Chicago Police Department's guidance to the community includes an insistence on the importance of preserving the integrity of the crime scene, suggesting "Don't touch any evidence." The alert also highlights the importance of noting any distinct characteristics of the offenders, such as "scars, limp, acne, teeth, etc." and asks that anyone approached by witnesses obtain their contact information and pass it on to the authorities.
