
A teacher at J.P. Taravella High School in Coral Springs, Florida, has been arrested on charges that he solicited or participated in inappropriate sexual behavior with a student, with 7News reporting that Lem McKinney, 40, was taken into custody by the Coral Springs Police. According to 7News, the victim’s mother shared details of the accusations, saying her daughter had been receiving disturbing messages from McKinney through Instagram, including one that read, "You have deep eyes and I can see myself getting lost in them. That's why I don't look at you for long when I do….. that's one and the other which I probably shouldn't tell you is that your lip gloss be popping and had me dreaming of kissing you."
McKinney, a social science teacher, had been working at the school since March 2022, NBC Miami states, and following the allegations, Broward County Public Schools announced his reassignment from the educational institution away from students pending the outcome of the investigation without revealing further details about the accusations; parents and students remain in shock over the recent developments with some expressing their concerns over the safety at the school and wondering about the screening processes for educators following such disturbing events. No further information has been released regarding the extent or nature of the alleged misconduct.
While McKinney's family declined to comment to 7News, the reaction amongst parents of students at J.P. Taravella High School ranged from dismay to concern, with comments made in interviews to 7News like, "It's terrible," and "It's very dangerous to send children to school today." McKinney remains in custody at the Broward County Jail, with his court appearance set to bring more light to the allegations held against him.
