A tragic three-vehicle collision on US Route 14 near Woodstock resulted in the death of an Elgin man and critical injuries to several others, including children. The McHenry County Sheriff's Office reports that the accident occurred on the afternoon of Sunday, February 16, at approximately 3:13 p.m. The deceased, a 33-year-old man from Elgin, was driving a 2018 Mercedes-Benz that collided head-on with a 2017 Toyota 4 Runner before a 2018 Jeep was caught up in the aftermath.
According to the McHenry County Sheriff's Office, the Mercedes was attempting an illicit pass in a no-passing zone when it struck the 4 Runner. Rescue services from the Woodstock Police Department, Woodstock Fire & Rescue District, and nearby districts were quickly on the scene, where the Elgin man was pronounced dead. The investigation unveiled that the victim was likely not wearing his seatbelt, while a 6-year-old passenger, who was secured, sustained life-threatening injuries and had to be airlifted.
The repercussions of the initial collision rippled to the occupants of the 4 Runner, all of whom were wearing seatbelts. The 43-year-old driver from Cross Plains, WI, and his female passenger were transported to the hospital, with the driver suffering life-threatening injuries. An 11-year-old girl and a 13-year-old boy were later airlifted due to the severity of their condition, even as the deployed airbags painted a grim tableau of a safety feature outmatched by the scale of impact.
In a secondary but related incident, a Jeep became a reluctant participant in the scene, striking the Toyota while trying to dodge the original collision. The Jeep sustained minor damages, and, no injuries were reported within. The McHenry County Sheriff's Office indicated that the Mercedes might have been involved in an earlier accident on the same route, close to Kishwaukee Valley Road – a detail adding weight to an already laden story of the roadway's dangers.
The sheriff's office indicates that the investigations are ongoing, led by their Major Traffic Crash Investigation Unit in coordination with the McHenry County Coroner’s Office. The names of the deceased and the injured have not been publicly released, as authorities are likely still in the process of notifying the next of kin and ensuring that all facets of this incident are thoroughly examined.
