Hoosier students from the local area are getting a hands-on education in how their state government functions, thanks to an opportunity provided by the Senate Page Program. Senator Vaneta Becker (R-Evansville) recently welcomed a group of students from Newburgh and Evansville to the Statehouse as part of this immersive educational experience. The program invites students from grades six through twelve to observe the legislative process up close on selected days during the session. Among the students who served as Senate pages in January and February were Ethan Bauer, Charlotte Czaplicki, Nicole Diab, Ella Clare Engbers, Andrew Foster, Marcston King, Alice Meny, and Evelyn Wu.
The Indiana Senate Republicans highlighted the presence of Boonville High School's Marcston King, who shared the spotlight with State Sen. Ed Charbonneau (R-Valparaiso) in a featured photograph. During their visit, these young Hoosiers were able to not only to tour the historic building but also observe debates from the Senate floor, potentially inspiring a generation to become more civically engaged.
Senator Becker, in promoting the program, emphasized the value it brings to the participants. "Being a Senate page is a wonderful opportunity for Hoosier students to learn firsthand how our state government operates," Becker said. "I enjoy meeting with local students who traveled all the way to the Statehouse to experience the legislature up close, and I encourage all eligible students to take advantage of this program," according to the statement on the Indiana Senate Republicans website.
The Senate Page Program operates on a structured weekly schedule, with students visiting on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays. Groups serve on Wednesdays, allowing for a comprehensive rotation that ensures numerous students get the opportunity to gain this unique experience. Interested parties are encouraged to inquire further details and learn how to apply by visiting the official Senate Page Program's website.
