Massachusetts State Police are currently investigating a severe head-on collision that resulted in the death of a Fairhaven man on the New Bedford-Fairhaven Bridge yesterday night. According to WHDH, "Preliminary information indicates that a vehicle traveling on Route 6 west in New Bedford crossed over the solid double yellow line and crashed into a vehicle traveling in the opposite direction."
The force of the impact took the life of Mason Evich, a 28-year-old from Fairhaven, while the other driver sustained non-life-threatening injuries. The Boston 25 News reported that, after striking the Tesla driven by Evich, the GMC Sierra's driver was transported to a local hospital. The aftermath of the crash led to a complete blockade of both sides of Route 6, as well as the ramp from Route 18 south to the bridge.
Investigators are working to fully determine the cause and circumstances that led to such a tragic event. Both vehicles were discovered with extensive damage and debris scattered across the roadway, hinting at the violent nature of the accident. As observed by authorities, state police at the scene were quick to respond to the late-night call.
No further details regarding the identity of the GMC Sierra's driver or potential contributing factors have been released at this time. The community is still waiting to truly understand what might have caused one driver to so disastrously drift across that solid boundary of asphalt and paint. In their coverage, Boston 25 News emphasized the ongoing nature of the situation: "This is a developing story. Check back for updates as more information becomes available."
