Last night, a distressing multi-vehicle collision on the Eisenhower Expressway in Broadview resulted in the death of one person and minor injuries to another, according to Illinois State Police. The fatal incident occurred around 7 p.m. in the westbound lanes of the expressway near 25th Street, where a pedestrian was struck by a vehicle after purportedly crossing the center median following the initial crash reported the Chicago Sun-Times.
The cascading effect of several vehicles that had to suddenly halt and swerve in the eastbound traffic sparked further chaos. "After several vehicles crashed while in the eastbound lanes of traffic, a pedestrian from one of the vehicle crossed over the center median and was fatally struck while in the westbound lanes," detailed a news release from ISP. The identities involved have not been publicly released as of this report according to ABC7 Chicago.
The aftermath led to a complete closure of both east and westbound lanes between 25th Street and Mannheim Road as authorities took over to investigate the scene. The lanes were subsequently reopened several hours later, with westbound lanes clearing around 10:30 p.m. and eastbound lanes resuming normal flow at about 12:40 a.m.
As investigations continue, state police have not yet disclosed any additional information surrounding the events that led up to the fatal encounter. The Chicago Sun-Times notes that one person, besides the deceased, was transported to the hospital with minor injuries. Traffic flow on the Eisenhower Expressway has since normalized, although the consequences of last night's tragic events will undoubtedly outlast the temporary road closures.
